Good Work Issue #9
Who is the $70,000 man? Do you need a Chief Impact Officer? Solving ESG reporting issues and much more.
Hello,
A very warm welcome to the ninth issue of Good Work.
The term ‘tone at the top’, whilst originating in accounting, has now spread out into wider business use. It’s useful shorthand to describe an organisation’s general ethical climate, as established by its leaders or board. Having a good tone, is widely accepted as helping prevent negatives like fraud, bullying, poor health and safety and other unethical practices. The opposite would be expressed by the more informal saying, ‘a fish rots from the head down’, so can lead to business disaster.
I always have this term in mind when writing our People with Purpose features, and in particular the latest focus on Dan Price AKA, the $70,000 dollar man, someone who anyone on LinkedIn will probably be familiar with as regularly popping up on the timeline. So, it was great to dig into what he has done, and why. It’s a complex, but fascinating story.
Also, we are still actively seeking contributors to the Digest and this newsletter, so if you have a viewpoint or story to share, please drop us a line today.
Happy reading,

People with Purpose - folks who are really making the difference.
Dan Price AKA, the $70,000 dollar man.
In 2015 he made headlines in raising the salary of each of his employees to at least $70,000 a year whilst slashing his own salary by $1 million to enable this to happen. It’s a great story, but not one without its complexities, so let’s take a look at Dan Price.

Business to prioritise people strategies as changing talent expectations dominate the CEO agenda.

Is it possible for women to “have it all” in the workplace? Not yet, says The Economist.
An Economist survey shows that despite some progress, women are still lagging behind their male counterparts in senior business roles, making up on average only a third of managers and just over a quarter of board seats. Read further insights here.
Video Inspiration - we love them, and think you will too.
This powerful video shows primary school children asked to draw different professional characters: a surgeon, a fighter pilot, and a firefighter. 66 children were asked to draw a picture, 61 drew men, five drew women. They were then asked if they would like to meet real-life versions of their drawings. Watch what happened next.
